Kendrapada, July 28 (UDN): Bhitarkanika National Park has achieved another milestone in wildlife conservation, with the annual nesting survey recording 117 active nests of estuarine crocodiles across its protected mangrove ecosystem.
The survey, conducted by the Mangrove Forest Division (Wildlife), Rajnagar, from May 1 to June 30, assessed crocodile breeding activity across all wildlife ranges of the national park.
The Kanika Wildlife Range recorded the highest number of nests with 106, followed by Rajnagar Wildlife Range with 10 nests and Mahakalpada Wildlife Range with one nest.
Forest officials said the findings highlight the continued stability of the estuarine crocodile population and reflect the positive impact of years of habitat protection, scientific monitoring, and conservation initiatives. Bhitarkanika currently supports around 1,858 estuarine crocodiles, making it one of the most important habitats for the species in India.
Officials said the annual nesting survey plays a crucial role in tracking breeding patterns, identifying key nesting locations, and strengthening future conservation strategies.
The consistent nesting activity recorded over the past several years indicates that the mangrove ecosystem continues to provide a suitable environment for crocodile breeding and survival.
Recognised as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, Bhitarkanika remains a vital centre for biodiversity conservation. The latest findings underline the importance of protecting coastal mangroves, which support a wide range of wildlife and maintain ecological balance.
The successful nesting record stands as a testament to Odisha’s ongoing efforts to preserve its unique natural heritage and safeguard endangered wildlife for future generations.
