Bhubaneswar, May 28, 2026: Residents of Bhubaneswar experienced significant relief on Thursday morning as the heat index fell sharply to 27°C at 5:30 am, marking a steep decline after days of intense humid conditions.

According to data compiled by the India Meteorological Department, the city had been reeling under persistently high heat index levels over the past 10 days, frequently ranging between 39°C and 44°C. The highest reading of 44°C was recorded on May 22, reflecting severe discomfort conditions for residents during the peak of the heat spell.

Meteorologists attributed the sudden drop in temperature to the influence of Kalabaisakhi (nor’wester) activity, which brought cooler winds, increased cloud cover, and possible rainfall, helping break the prolonged heatwave conditions.

The sharp fall of nearly 17°C from the recent peak has provided much-needed respite to the city after an extended period of oppressive heat and humidity.

Weather experts, however, cautioned that such transitional conditions are common ahead of the monsoon season and advised residents to remain prepared for possible fluctuations in temperature and humidity in the coming days.
