Bhubaneswar, May 27: The India Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department) has issued an Orange Alert for several districts of Odisha, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds over the coming days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, an upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Odisha and adjoining areas is influencing weather conditions across the state. Light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms have already been reported in isolated regions, bringing temporary relief from the prevailing heat.
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kmph in districts including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, and Cuttack over the next few days.
Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in northern districts such as Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, while parts of western Odisha may continue to experience heat wave conditions despite the rain activity.
Officials said light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected to continue across many districts till early June, although the intensity may gradually decrease later in the week.
The weather department has also issued a fishermen advisory, warning of rough sea conditions and squally weather along the North Odisha coast on May 28 and 29, with wind speeds likely to touch 60 kmph in some areas.
Residents in vulnerable districts have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and follow official weather updates and safety advisories.
