Massive Fire at Cuttack Fish Market Causes Extensive Losses to Traders and Bank Branch

Cuttack, June 1: A devastating fire that broke out in the early hours of Monday at the fish market near Press Chhak in Cuttack caused widespread destruction, severely impacting local traders and damaging a branch of Bank of India operating within the market complex.

According to preliminary reports, the blaze erupted around 2:00 a.m. and spread rapidly through the building. The presence of combustible materials, including a paint storage facility, reportedly intensified the fire and complicated firefighting operations. More than ten fire engines were deployed to the site, with firefighters battling the flames for several hours amid dense smoke and extreme heat.

The fire completely destroyed multiple fish stalls and business establishments, affecting the livelihoods of approximately 17 fish traders. Deep freezers, equipment, inventory, and other assets were reduced to ashes, resulting in significant financial losses for the affected families.

The Bank of India branch located on the upper floor of the building also sustained severe damage. Initial assessments indicate that furniture, records, documents, and other assets were impacted by the blaze. Reports suggest that cash deposits belonging to fish traders, estimated at approximately ₹50–60 lakh, may have been destroyed in the incident.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. Efforts to clear the site and evaluate losses are ongoing.

The incident has caused considerable concern within the local business community, highlighting the importance of enhanced fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in commercial establishments.
