Bhubaneswar, May 26: Odisha has expressed pride and appreciation after eminent scholar and litterateur Dr Mahendra Kumar Mishra was conferred the Padma Shri Award 2026 in recognition of his lifelong contribution to documenting and preserving the oral traditions of tribal and folk communities.

The honour was presented by the President of India Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony in New Delhi’s Rashtrapati Bhavan, acknowledging his extensive work in language, education and cultural preservation.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi congratulated Dr Mishra, calling the recognition a moment of immense pride for Odisha and its rich cultural heritage. He praised the scholar’s decades of dedication to strengthening indigenous knowledge systems and promoting linguistic diversity.

According to available information, Dr Mishra’s work focuses on the documentation of tribal voices, including myths, epics, proverbs and traditional songs. Over the years, he has authored more than 25 books on Odia and tribal folklore, contributing significantly to the preservation of oral literature that is often at risk of fading.

His research has also played an important role in shaping multilingual education models in tribal languages, helping integrate local knowledge systems into learning frameworks and strengthening cultural inclusion in education.

Officials and academics noted that his work goes beyond literature, reflecting a deep engagement with Odisha’s cultural identity and the lived experiences of its tribal communities.

The award has been widely welcomed in literary and academic circles, with many describing it as recognition of India’s diverse linguistic heritage and the importance of preserving indigenous traditions for future generations.

The Chief Minister also extended prayers for Dr Mishra’s continued good health and long life, stating that his contributions will continue to inspire scholars, educators and cultural researchers across the country.
