Bhubaneswar, Sept. 24 (UDN): Odisha remained on flood watch on Thursday as a deep depression over the region continued its slow movement towards southern parts of the state, triggering heavy rainfall and raising concerns over rising water levels in rivers and low-lying areas.
The weather system moved at around 3 kmph during the six hours after crossing the coast, prolonging the spell of rain across several districts.
Koraput Records Intense Rain
Koraput and adjoining areas witnessed some of the heaviest rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Similiguda recorded 193.3 mm of rain, the highest among the reported locations. Chitrakonda received 168.8 mm, while Tangi recorded 142 mm.
G Udayagiri registered 125.4 mm, followed by Paralakhemundi at 121.4 mm and Gosani at 120 mm. Banki and Ghasipura also recorded significant rainfall of 112 mm and 110 mm, respectively.
Slow-Moving System Raises Flood Concerns
The deep depression crossed the coast late Wednesday night near an area southwest of Kalingapatnam along the north Andhra Pradesh-southern Odisha region.
The system is expected to move towards Koraput by Thursday evening. Its slow movement could result in prolonged rainfall over southern Odisha, increasing the risk of waterlogging and localised flooding.
Heavy rainfall in southern and coastal districts has already affected several low-lying areas. The Mahanadi and other major rivers are also being closely watched as continued rainfall could cause their water levels to rise.
Authorities Keep Vigil
With more rain forecast in the coming hours, authorities in vulnerable areas are maintaining a close watch on the situation.
Residents in low-lying and flood-prone locations have been advised to remain alert and follow weather and local administration advisories as the deep depression continues to weaken and move inland.
