Bhubaneswar, May 26: In view of the prevailing severe heat conditions across Odisha, the state government has intensified precautionary and safety measures at worksites and public places to protect citizens and workers from heat-related illnesses.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said an advisory has already been issued asking people to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak heat hours between 11 am and 3 pm. Outdoor work related to road construction and other works department activities has also been restricted during this period.

The Minister informed that mining operations across the state have been directed to implement adequate precautionary arrangements, including water sprinklers, fans, shaded areas, and proper hydration facilities for workers exposed to extreme heat conditions.

The Transport Department has also been instructed to ensure the availability of drinking water for passengers at key locations and keep Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) ready to address dehydration-related cases.

People travelling during peak hours for urgent work have been advised to carry drinking water, wear protective headgear such as hats or cloth coverings, and use sunglasses to minimise heat exposure.

Referring to reports of suspected sunstroke-related deaths, the Minister said the exact cause would be confirmed after postmortem examinations. District collectors have been directed to review such cases on priority, and ex gratia assistance will be provided to the next of kin within 24 hours after confirmation of heat-related fatalities.

The government has appealed to citizens to remain cautious and avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary.
