Bhubaneswar, June 1: Odisha is set to strengthen its tourism sector with a major shift towards sustainable water transport, including the introduction of electric boats at key tourist destinations and the development of cruise tourism at Kolab reservoir in Koraput district.

The initiative, led by the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC), aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, minimise water pollution, and enhance visitor experience across the state’s major water tourism sites. The transition marks a significant step towards building greener and more sustainable tourism infrastructure in Odisha.

Electric Boats in Phase One Rollout

In the first phase, electric boats will be introduced at prominent destinations including Chilika Lake, Hirakud Reservoir, Bhitarkanika National Park, and Kolab in Koraput.

The proposed fleet includes a mix of passenger-friendly electric vessels. Kolab will receive a 30-seater luxury electric boat, Hirakud will be equipped with 20-seater and 10-seater electric boats, Bhitarkanika will get a 20-seater vessel, and Chilika (Barkul) will see the deployment of an eight-seater electric boat.

Officials said some of the vessels are expected to use hybrid solar-electric systems, further supporting Odisha’s shift towards clean energy-based tourism solutions.

Push for Sustainable Tourism and Ecosystem Protection

The project is aimed at reducing environmental impact in ecologically sensitive regions such as Chilika and Bhitarkanika, where marine and wetland ecosystems require careful protection. Authorities believe electric boats will help cut emissions, reduce fuel consumption, and support long-term conservation efforts.

While the initiative has received positive feedback from tourism stakeholders and environmental groups, officials have acknowledged the need for consultations with traditional boat operators to ensure a smooth transition and address livelihood concerns.

Cruise Tourism Planned in Koraput

Alongside the electric boat initiative, the state government is preparing to launch cruise tourism at the Kolab reservoir. The project will include cruise services as well as water sports and adventure activities, aimed at positioning Koraput as a major eco-tourism and adventure tourism hub.

Development work worth approximately ₹10 crore is underway to upgrade infrastructure at Pandi Ghat, which will serve as the base for cruise operations.

Expansion Across Tourism Hubs

Tourism officials have indicated that the electric boat initiative will be gradually expanded to nearly 100 water-based tourism locations across Odisha in the coming years. The boats will feature modern safety systems and improved passenger amenities to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience.

The state government’s broader vision is to integrate sustainable mobility with tourism development, balancing environmental protection with economic growth. The initiative is also expected to generate local employment opportunities and increase tourist inflow across key destinations.

Odisha’s move towards electric mobility in water tourism reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development while enhancing the state’s appeal as a leading eco-tourism destination in India.
