Athagarh, July 27 (UDN): In a beautiful celebration of love that transcended borders and cultures, a Polish woman tied the knot with an Odisha native in a traditional Odia wedding ceremony at Athagarh in Cuttack district, winning hearts with her wholehearted embrace of local customs and rituals.
The bride, Diana, married Subal Beura, a resident of Mahalakshmipur village in Athagarh, after the couple's relationship blossomed during their stay in the Netherlands, where both were working.
Their story began with a chance meeting at a restaurant in the European country. What started as casual conversations gradually developed into a deep friendship and later transformed into a lifelong commitment. After deciding to marry, the couple chose to solemnise their wedding in Subal's hometown following age-old Odia traditions.
The ceremony witnessed Diana dressed as a traditional Odia bride, adorned in a red bridal saree along with sindoor, mehendi, alta, and the customary veil. She participated in every ritual with devotion, including the sacred fire ceremony and the traditional wedding rites, drawing admiration from family members, relatives and local residents.
While Subal's family readily accepted the relationship, obtaining the consent of Diana's parents required extra effort. Determined to win their trust, Subal travelled nearly 1,100 kilometres to meet Diana's family in Poland. His sincerity eventually convinced them to bless the marriage.
Although Diana's parents could not travel to India due to age and travel constraints, they remained part of the celebrations through a live video broadcast.
"My in-laws are elderly and have never travelled by air. Since it wasn't possible for them to come to India, we livestreamed the wedding on YouTube so they could witness the ceremony from Poland and bless us," Subal said.
Speaking about the cultural differences, he noted that marriages in Odisha are often solemnised soon after both families give their consent, whereas in Poland, couples generally spend more time together before deciding to marry.
The wedding turned into a memorable occasion for both families, symbolising not only the union of two individuals but also the coming together of two cultures and traditions. Diana's willingness to embrace Odia customs and her seamless participation in the rituals left guests impressed, making the ceremony a heartwarming example of how love can bridge geographical and cultural boundaries.
The cross-cultural wedding has since drawn widespread appreciation, with many describing it as a touching reminder that mutual respect, understanding and affection can unite people from different parts of the world.
