June 13: Sambalpur is preparing for one of its most celebrated cultural events, the Sital Sasthi Festival, which will begin on June 14 and continue for nearly a week. The annual festival, which symbolises the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, will transform the city into a vibrant hub of devotion, music, dance, and traditional processions.
Grand Opening and Rituals
The festivities will commence with the sacred Patrapendi ritual on June 14, marking the formal beginning of the celebrations. The highlight of the festival—the celestial wedding ceremony—will be solemnised on the night of June 18. This will be followed by the traditional homecoming procession of the divine couple, which will begin the next evening and conclude on June 20.
Massive Cultural Participation
This year’s festival is expected to witness participation from more than 7,500 artistes from Odisha and several other states. Three major committees—Nandapada, Jhaduapada, and Modipada—will lead the celebrations with elaborate processions and thematic performances.
The Nandapada Committee, the oldest and largest organiser, has allocated around ₹90 lakh and will feature nearly 2,000 artistes. Its procession will include traditional performances such as Dulduli, Samprada, and Ghanta, along with cultural troupes from Kerala, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and West Bengal. Key attractions include Maha Mangal Aarti, fireworks, and eco-themed tableaux.
The Jhaduapada Committee has earmarked ₹75–80 lakh and will showcase around 2,700 artistes. Its procession will feature floats depicting mythological themes such as Mahakal and Nrusingha, along with performances by renowned groups like the Baba Bateswar Kirtan Samiti from Bhopal. A giant Putana Badh tableau will be one of the major highlights.
The Modipada Committee has set aside ₹50 lakh for its celebrations, with over 2,800 artistes participating. It will present folk dances such as Ghanta, Dulduli, Ghumura, Ranapa, and tribal performances. The committee will also highlight environmental awareness through a “Save Tree” theme and display depictions of Lord Jagannath, Maa Samaleswari, and scenes from Hindu mythology.
Growing Scale and Support
The festival has been steadily expanding in scale and grandeur, with the combined budget of the three committees rising to approximately ₹2.2 crore, compared to ₹1.7 crore last year.
In addition, the Odisha government has sanctioned a grant of ₹1.08 crore to support the celebrations and promote the preservation of the state’s cultural heritage. The funds will be distributed among 21 local committees across the region.
Cultural Significance
The Sital Sasthi festival remains a powerful expression of Sambalpur’s cultural identity, blending devotion with large-scale community participation. With its mix of ritual traditions, folk performances, and elaborate tableaux, the festival continues to attract both devotees and cultural enthusiasts from across India.
