Bhubaneswar, June 1: A major infrastructure upgrade is underway on National Highway-16 as authorities move forward with the expansion of the Palasuni Bridge from four lanes to six lanes. The project is designed to improve traffic flow and strengthen connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, one of Odisha’s busiest transportation corridors.

With rapid urban growth and increasing vehicle movement between the twin cities, the existing bridge has been experiencing significant congestion, particularly during peak commuting hours. The widening project aims to enhance road capacity, reduce travel delays, and improve overall commuter convenience.

Once completed, the upgraded bridge is expected to support smoother traffic movement for daily commuters, commercial vehicles, and long-distance travelers using NH-16. The project also forms part of broader efforts to modernize Odisha’s highway infrastructure and accommodate rising transportation demands.

Officials believe the six-lane expansion will help address long-standing traffic bottlenecks in the Palasuni area while improving safety and travel efficiency. The development is expected to contribute to economic activity by facilitating faster movement of goods and people between the state's key urban and commercial centres.

Construction activities are progressing in phases, with authorities targeting completion by 2027. Upon completion, the expanded bridge is expected to play a crucial role in supporting future growth and enhancing regional connectivity across Odisha.
