Bhubaneswar, May 22: Western Odisha is experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring across several districts on Friday. Sambalpur emerged as the hottest location, recording 41.2°C at 11:30 am, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.
Jharsuguda also recorded high temperatures at 40.6°C, while Hirakud registered 39.6°C during the same period, indicating widespread heat stress across the region.
The state capital Bhubaneswar was not spared either, recording around 35°C along with high humidity levels, adding to discomfort for residents.
IMD officials noted that western and northern parts of Odisha continue to face the harshest impact of the ongoing heatwave, with temperatures consistently staying above 39°C. The conditions have made outdoor activities particularly challenging for workers in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and public services.
Authorities have advised people to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours between 11 am and 4 pm and to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
